TCS vs Capgemini for Freshers (2026): The Company Sets Your Band, the Allocation Sets Your Career

Updated August 2026 · Packages indicative — confirm on each company's official careers page

Write both. The syllabi overlap enough that one preparation cycle covers them, though the assessment formats differ sharply — our Capgemini and Cognizant comparison works through what a game-based round and a pseudo-code section actually test.

On money: Capgemini's Analyst intake at around ₹4 LPA is ahead of TCS Ninja at about ₹3.4 LPA, and its senior analyst and Exceller band of roughly ₹5.5–7.5 LPA overlaps TCS Digital at around ₹7 LPA. Where TCS separates is the top — Prime at roughly ₹9–11.5 LPA has no counterpart here. So Capgemini is ahead at the base, they are comparable in the middle, and TCS wins outright if you can clear the Advanced section.

That is the part students compare, and it is not the part that determines their first two years. What does is allocation — which project you are put on after training. It decides what you actually build, what you learn, whether you sit on the bench, and what your resume says at the two-year mark when you want to move. Two freshers who joined the same employer on the same band can have completely different skills and options by then, and the gap between them is usually larger than the gap between these two companies.

Neither employer lets you choose your project, and any recruiter who implies otherwise is overselling. What differs is the shape of the odds: very large scale means enormous variety, which is both a better chance of interesting work and a better chance of legacy maintenance nobody wants. A smaller Indian footprint means narrower but somewhat more predictable work. Ask about the process rather than hoping for a good outcome.

Frequently asked questions

Which one pays more for a fresher?

At the base, Capgemini — Analyst at roughly ₹4 LPA against TCS Ninja at about ₹3.4 LPA. In the middle they are comparable, with Capgemini's senior analyst and Exceller band of roughly ₹5.5–7.5 LPA overlapping TCS Digital at around ₹7 LPA. At the top TCS wins outright: Prime at roughly ₹9–11.5 LPA has no equivalent here. Work out honestly which TCS tier you can reach and the question resolves. What is project allocation, and why does it matter so much?

After training you are assigned to a project based on business need — client demand, which accounts have openings, which skills are short that quarter. That assignment decides what you build for the next year or two, what technologies you actually touch, how much you learn, and what your resume says when you want to move. Two freshers on the same band at the same employer can end up with completely different options by year two, and that gap is usually wider than the difference between two employers. It is the highest-impact thing about your first job and the least discussed at offer stage.

Can I choose my project or my technology?

No, and be sceptical of anyone who suggests you can. What you can do is influence the odds: state your preferences clearly during training and to whoever handles allocation, perform well in training since it is visible to the people staffing projects, learn the technologies that are in demand at that employer rather than the ones you already like, and make yourself easy to say yes to. None of this guarantees an outcome. All of it improves the distribution.

What should I ask about allocation before accepting?

How long training runs and how soon after it allocation typically happens. What happens if you are unallocated — how pay works, whether any service agreement clock runs, and what the process is for getting staffed. Whether preferences are collected at all, and whether they are ever honoured. How long you must stay on a project before you can request a change, and what the internal movement process actually looks like. Ask these of the recruiter, and ask the same questions of someone who joined a year ago, because the two answers are often different and the second is more useful.

What if I get put on a project that teaches me nothing?

It is common enough that you should plan for it rather than treat it as bad luck. Support and maintenance work on an ageing system pays the same as interesting work and builds far less, and freshers routinely lose two years to it without noticing until they try to switch. The response is not to resign — it is to protect a few hours a week from the first month for skills the project is not giving you, and to work the internal movement process deliberately once you are eligible. The people who escape a weak first allocation are the ones who kept building outside it.

How do the growth paths differ?

TCS offers the largest internal job market in Indian IT alongside tiered entry, which means a great deal of movement is available — to someone who goes looking for it. Capgemini offers a smaller Indian cohort with consulting-adjacent delivery, where being noticed can be easier but the number of internal destinations is smaller. Neither promotes you for waiting. The honest common factor is that at both, the second job — internal or external — goes to the person who built something beyond what the allocation required.

How do the assessments differ?

Substantially. TCS runs a conventional aptitude and coding assessment where the Advanced section decides your tier. Capgemini runs a game-based aptitude round, then a pseudo-code section and an English assessment — reasoning-led, and asking you to read and trace code rather than produce it under time pressure. That difference is decision-grade if coding speed is your weakness, and our Capgemini and Cognizant comparison covers how to prepare for those formats specifically.

What should I get in writing before accepting either offer?

The band the offer is for; the full package breakdown separating fixed from variable; the service agreement terms including duration and penalty; the training period terms; the location and whether it is confirmed; the shift pattern; and any conditions attached, such as background verification or final results. Verbal assurances about projects, technologies or locations are not terms of employment, and never agree to original certificates being retained.

I am in the 2027 batch. What should I do now?

Run one aptitude and core-CS cycle, which serves both and every other mass recruiter, and keep coding consistently since that decides whether the TCS upper tiers are open to you. Add two things specific to this pair: practise tracing short programs on paper until predicting output is automatic, which is exactly what a pseudo-code section tests, and sit a sample game-based assessment once so the format is not a surprise. And decide now that whatever project you are allocated, you will keep building outside it — that habit matters more to where you are at 25 than which of these two you join.
