GRE 2026 Complete Guide for Indian Students: Format, Scores, Cost, Prep Plan

The GRE is a general aptitude test — verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and analytical writing — used mainly by US masters programs (and some in Canada, Singapore and a few European schools). It is not an English test: most US universities want the GRE and an English test (TOEFL/IELTS).
The test got significantly shorter in September 2023 — under two hours now — but the scoring and difficulty did not change. Fees, dates and policies below are indicative for 2026; always verify on the official ETS site before registering.
The GRE at a glance (shorter format)
The second Verbal and Quant sections are adaptive at the section level: do well on the first section and the second gets harder (and unlocks higher scores). There is no longer an unscored experimental section.
| Section | Questions / task | Time | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Analytical Writing | 1 essay ("Analyze an Issue") | 30 min | 0–6 in half-points |
| Verbal Reasoning | 2 sections, 27 questions total | ~41 min | 130–170 |
| Quantitative Reasoning | 2 sections, 27 questions total | ~47 min | 130–170 |
| Total | — | ≈ 1 hr 58 min, no breaks | V + Q reported separately (260–340 combined) |
Cost, validity and logistics for India
- Fee in India: roughly ₹22,000–23,000 (revised periodically — check ets.org for the current amount). Rescheduling and additional score reports cost extra.
- Scores are valid for 5 years — taking it in 3rd year of BTech and applying after graduation or work experience is a legitimate strategy.
- Test at a centre or at home (proctored). Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam and Tirupati have centres; home testing needs a quiet room, a stable connection and a working webcam.
- You can take it once every 21 days, up to 5 times in 12 months. ScoreSelect lets you send only the attempt you choose — a weak first attempt does not haunt you.
What counts as a good score
Indian engineering students typically score much higher on Quant than Verbal — admissions committees know this, so a 168Q/145V reads as normal, while a strong Verbal score genuinely stands out.
| Target | Quant | Verbal | AWA |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top-25 US CS/engineering programs | 165+ | 155+ | 4.0+ |
| Solid state universities (typical Telugu-state targets) | 158–164 | 148–154 | 3.5+ |
| Programs where GRE is optional | Submit only if it strengthens your profile | — | — |
An honest 8–12 week prep plan
- Weeks 1–2: take a full official practice test cold. Your Quant gap is usually speed and silly errors, not concepts; your Verbal gap is usually vocabulary-in-context and reading stamina.
- Weeks 3–8: Quant — drill the official question pool by topic; maintain an error log and re-solve every logged mistake a week later. Verbal — read dense non-fiction daily (editorials, science journalism); learn vocabulary in sentences, not word lists.
- Weeks 9–12: one timed full test per week, alternating with review days. Write 3–4 timed AWA essays against the official prompt pool; have someone (or an AI) tear apart your structure.
- Free official material first: the ETS POWERPREP tests are the only questions that perfectly match real difficulty. Paid courses help discipline more than content.
When to skip the GRE
Many US programs went GRE-optional after 2020 and stayed there; Germany, the UK, Canada and Ireland mostly never asked. If your target list is GRE-optional and your CGPA + projects are strong, the honest math often favors spending those 10 weeks on your profile instead.
Take the GRE if: your CGPA is below ~7.5 and you need a counterweight; you target top-25 US programs or assistantships where it still carries weight; or you want the 5-year option value while you are still in exam mode at college.
Speaking fluency is built out loud, not in books
Interviews decide the rest of your abroad journey too — admissions, visas, assistantships. Practise them with Phiny's AI interviewer and build the spoken-English reps that exams and interviews both reward. Text interviews are free and unlimited.

How much does the GRE cost in India in 2026?
Roughly ₹22,000–23,000; ETS revises the fee periodically, so verify on ets.org before registering. Budget extra for rescheduling (~half the fee) and additional score reports beyond the four free ones.
Is the GRE required for MS in USA in 2026?
It depends on the program — a large share went optional after 2020. Check each department's admissions page. A strong score still helps borderline CGPAs and some assistantship decisions; where optional, do not submit a weak score.
What is a good GRE score for Indian students?
For top-25 US engineering/CS programs: 165+ Quant, 155+ Verbal, 4.0+ AWA. For solid state universities: roughly 158–164 Quant and 148–154 Verbal. Quant matters most for engineering admits.
How long should I prepare for the GRE?
8–12 weeks of consistent prep (1.5–2 hours/day) is the realistic band for most engineering students. Less than 4 weeks shows up in Verbal; more than 4 months usually signals drifting, not improving.
Can I take the GRE at home?
Yes — the GRE General Test is offered at home with online proctoring, same content and scoring as centre-based. You need a private room, stable internet and a webcam; some universities have no preference, so pick whichever setting lets you focus.
