TOEFL iBT 2026 Guide for Indian Students: Format, Scoring, Fees, Prep Plan

TOEFL iBT is the other big English proficiency test — historically the default for US universities, and accepted in Canada, Germany and most of Europe (UK universities accept it for admission, but check visa-specific rules). It is fully computer-based: you type, click and speak into a microphone; there is no human interviewer.
Like the GRE, TOEFL got shorter in July 2023 — now under two hours. Fees and policies below are indicative for 2026; verify on the official ETS site before registering.
The test at a glance (shortened iBT)
The 2023 revision removed the unscored questions and replaced the old independent essay with the shorter "Academic Discussion" task — you write a forum-style reply to a professor's question in 10 minutes.
| Section | What it is | Time | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading | 2 academic passages, 10 questions each | ~35 min | 0–30 |
| Listening | Lectures + conversations, 28 questions | ~36 min | 0–30 |
| Speaking | 4 tasks (1 independent + 3 integrated), spoken into a mic | ~16 min | 0–30 |
| Writing | Integrated task + "Writing for an Academic Discussion" (10 min post) | ~29 min | 0–30 |
| Total | — | ≈ 1 hr 56 min | 0–120 |
What scores universities want
Programs that fund students as teaching assistants often set a separate Speaking minimum — if you are hunting assistantships, the Speaking section quietly matters more than the total.
| Total score | What it gets you |
|---|---|
| 80–89 | Meets the floor at many US state universities and most German programs |
| 90–99 | Comfortable for the broad middle of US programs |
| 100+ | Meets or beats nearly every top-program requirement; some also want Speaking ≥ 22–24 (matters for TA roles) |
Fees and logistics for India
- Fee: roughly ₹17,000 (revised periodically — verify on ets.org). Rescheduling and extra score reports cost extra.
- Results in 4–8 days. Scores valid 2 years. MyBest Scores automatically combines your best section scores across attempts — some universities accept it, some want a single sitting; check each.
- Test at a centre (Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam and other Tier-2 cities) or the TOEFL iBT Home Edition with online proctoring.
- You can retake after 3 days — the shortest retake gap of the major tests.
TOEFL or IELTS?
- Pick TOEFL if: you are US-focused, prefer typing and clicking to a live interview, and are comfortable with American-accented academic audio.
- Pick IELTS if: you want the widest acceptance (UK/Australia/Canada immigration routes included), prefer talking to a human over a microphone, or want near-daily computer-based test dates in Tier-2 cities.
- Score equivalence (rough): IELTS 6.5 ≈ TOEFL 79–93; IELTS 7.0 ≈ TOEFL 94–101. Universities publish both requirements — meet whichever is easier for you.
- Speaking into a mic under time pressure is the genuinely different skill: if it unnerves you, that alone is a reason to pick IELTS — or to practise until it doesn't.
A 4-week prep plan (TOEFL rewards format familiarity)
- Week 1: one full official practice test. TOEFL is more coachable than IELTS — most score gains come from knowing the task formats cold, especially the integrated Speaking/Writing templates.
- Weeks 2–3: drill the 4 Speaking task types daily with a timer (15–30 s prep, 45–60 s response). Learn one template per task and make it automatic. Same for the integrated Writing structure: listen → note-map → write.
- Week 4: two more timed full tests, error review, and daily academic listening (lecture-style podcasts) — note-taking speed is the hidden bottleneck in both Listening and integrated tasks.
Speaking fluency is built out loud, not in books
Interviews decide the rest of your abroad journey too — admissions, visas, assistantships. Practise them with Phiny's AI interviewer and build the spoken-English reps that exams and interviews both reward. Text interviews are free and unlimited.

How much does TOEFL cost in India in 2026?
Roughly ₹17,000; ETS revises fees periodically, so check ets.org before registering. Rescheduling and additional score reports beyond the free four cost extra.
What TOEFL score do I need for MS in USA?
80+ clears the floor at many state universities; 90–100 covers the broad middle; 100+ meets nearly every top program. If you want a teaching assistantship, check the program's separate Speaking minimum (often 22–24).
Is TOEFL easier than IELTS for Indian students?
Neither is easier; they test the same skills differently. TOEFL is fully computer-based with American academic audio and template-friendly tasks; IELTS has a human speaking interview and British/Australian accents. Students who hate talking to a microphone do better on IELTS, and vice versa.
Is the TOEFL Home Edition accepted by universities?
Widely accepted by US universities, with the same content and scoring as centre-based. A few institutions and some visa processes prefer centre-based tests — verify with your target universities before choosing home testing.
How soon can I retake the TOEFL?
After 3 days — the shortest retake window of the major tests. With MyBest Scores combining your best sections across attempts (where accepted), a strategic quick retake can be worthwhile.
