IELTS is the most widely accepted English proficiency test — UK, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Germany and most US universities take it. For a masters abroad you almost always need IELTS Academic (not General Training, which is for migration).

Fees and policies below are indicative for 2026 — verify on the IDP IELTS India site before booking. Band requirements are set by each university, not by IELTS.

The test at a glance

Your overall band is the average of the four modules, rounded to the nearest half band. Speaking is a live conversation with a human examiner — usually on the same day for computer-based tests, or within a few days of the written test for paper.

ModuleWhat it isTimeScored
Listening4 recordings, 40 questions~30 minBand 0–9
Reading (Academic)3 long passages, 40 questions60 minBand 0–9
Writing (Academic)Task 1: describe a chart/diagram (150 words). Task 2: essay (250 words)60 minBand 0–9

What the bands mean for admissions

Watch the per-module minimums: "6.5 overall with no band below 6.0" is a common pattern, and a 5.5 in Writing can sink an application even with a 7.0 overall. Check each university's exact wording.

Overall bandWhat it gets you
6.0–6.5Most German programs, many UK/Canadian/Australian universities (some want 6.0+ in every module)
7.0The safe all-rounder score — meets most top-university requirements including competitive UK programs
7.5+Above almost every masters requirement; matters for scholarships and some visa point systems

Speaking: what actually gets asked

Part 1 (4–5 min) — everyday questions about you: your studies, hometown, food, hobbies, technology use. Typical: "Do you work or study?", "What do you like about your hometown?", "How often do you use public transport?"

Part 2 (3–4 min) — the cue card: one minute to prepare, then speak for up to two minutes. Typical cards: "Describe a person who inspired you", "Describe a place you like to visit", "Describe a skill you learned recently", "Describe a difficult decision you made".

Part 3 (4–5 min) — abstract discussion linked to the cue card: "Why do people admire public figures?", "Is it better to learn skills online or from people?", "How has technology changed how your generation makes decisions?"

  • You are scored on Fluency & Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range & Accuracy, and Pronunciation — equally weighted. Memorized answers are penalized; structured spontaneity wins.
  • The single highest-leverage habit: speak English out loud daily for 2 weeks before the test — with a friend, or with an AI speaking partner. Fluency decays without reps, and Part 2 stamina (2 minutes solo) needs practice.
  • Indian-English pronunciation is fine — pronunciation scoring is about clarity and intonation, not accent. Speed is the common problem: nervous test-takers rush.

Fees and logistics for India

  • Fee: about ₹18,000 (revised periodically — verify on the IDP IELTS India site). Computer-based and paper-based cost the same.
  • Computer-based gives results in 1–3 days (paper takes ~13) and near-daily test dates in Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Guntur and most Tier-2 cities.
  • One Skill Retake: available in India — if one module underperforms, you can retake just that module once instead of the whole test. Check that your target university accepts OSR results (most do, some don't).
  • Scores are valid for 2 years — time your attempt within 2 years of your program start date.

Module-wise prep that actually moves bands

  • Listening: practise with British/Australian accents (BBC podcasts, official practice tests) — the accent gap, not vocabulary, is what surprises Indian students. Read questions before the audio starts.
  • Reading: it is a time-management test disguised as a reading test. Learn to skim for structure first, then hunt answers; never read a passage word-by-word before seeing the questions.
  • Writing: Task 2 is worth double Task 1. Learn one clean essay skeleton (position → 2 developed body paragraphs → conclusion) and practise against real prompts; overlong, memorized-phrase-stuffed essays score worse than clear simple ones.
  • Speaking: daily out-loud practice beats everything. Record yourself on Part 2 cards and listen back — you will hear the fillers and the flat intonation yourself.

Speaking fluency is built out loud, not in books

Interviews decide the rest of your abroad journey too — admissions, visas, assistantships. Practise them with Phiny's AI interviewer and build the spoken-English reps that exams and interviews both reward. Text interviews are free and unlimited.

Frequently asked questions

How much does IELTS cost in India in 2026?

About ₹18,000 for both computer-based and paper-based Academic tests. The fee is revised periodically — verify on the IDP IELTS India website before booking.

What band do I need for a masters abroad?

Most universities ask 6.5 overall (often with no module below 6.0); competitive UK programs commonly want 7.0. Germany typically asks 6.5. The requirement is per university and per program — always check the exact wording including module minimums.

Computer or paper IELTS — which is better?

Same test, same scoring. Computer-based gives faster results (1–3 days), more test dates, and typing beats handwriting for most engineering students in Writing. Choose paper only if you genuinely think better on paper.

What is the IELTS One Skill Retake?

If one module scores below your target, you can retake just that module once within 60 days instead of re-sitting the full test. It is available in India; most universities accept OSR results but a few don't — confirm with your target university first.

How long is an IELTS score valid?

Two years from the test date. Universities generally require the score to be valid on the date you start (or apply to) the program, so test no earlier than ~18 months before your intake.
